“Music Is My Gift”

Have you ever thought of creating a gift from music? Here are a couple of ideas from our 2002 Challenge! This 2002 had three different challenge ideas and they are listed below.

1. Write a new song. Maybe it will be your first song or maybe your next song.
If you write your song out you can use it as a gift for someone you like or for someone who has been nice to you! If you don’t know how to write a song can you make one up and get someone to help you write it down?

2. Write down in words how music makes you feel! Take some time and think about how you feel after you have learned a really great piece. Was there ever a piece you really loved and didn’t think you could ever learn? Did you learn it? What was it like once you could play the piece and how did that make you feel? These are some suggested themes for students taking on this challenge. If music makes you feel good maybe the person who is teaching you or helping with the cost of lessons might like to see your written work, as a way to say thank you!

3. Make a piece of visual art that shows how you feel about music? Some people in the 2002 created banners, some created instruments, some drew wonderful pictures!

What great gift music can be not only for the player but for those who listen as well.
The 2002 Challenge had over 60 entries and 24 of these were songs people wrote themselves. The winner of the 2002 Challenge was Emily Johnson, she wrote a song called Oceans. The song was inspired by a trip to the Oregon Coast! Little did she know that her song would end up putting the grand prize a Henry F. Miller (new piano) in her room!
